Short answer: reduce what enters your home in the first place, because the disposal end of the system does not perform anything like the way most people believe. Geyer, Jambeck and Law's 2017 analysis in Science Advances, the first accounting of all plastic ever manufactured, found that of roughly 6,300 million tonnes of plastic waste generated by 2015, about 9% had been recycled and 12% incinerated. The remaining 79% accumulated in landfills or the natural environment.
That number is not an argument for giving up. It is an argument for putting your effort at a different point in the chain.
Why the recycling symbol misled everyone
The triangular symbol with a number inside is a resin identification code. It tells a sorting facility which polymer the item is. It has never been a promise that the item is recycled, or even that it is accepted anywhere near you.
Only two resins are reliably recyclable at scale: PET (1), used for drinks bottles, and HDPE (2), used for milk bottles and detergent containers. Both have established markets and both retain enough value to be worth processing.
Everything from 3 to 7 is a different situation. Some is technically recyclable and economically pointless. Some contaminates the stream it enters. Films and flexible packaging (crisp packets, pouches, wrappers) are generally not recyclable in kerbside systems at all, and putting them in the bin makes sorting harder rather than helping.

There is a second problem that no amount of household diligence fixes. Plastic downcycles: each pass degrades the polymer, so a bottle does not become a bottle indefinitely. Unlike aluminium or glass, this is not a loop. It is a slope.

Where the effort is actually worth spending
Ranked by how much they change the numbers, rather than by how virtuous they feel:
1. Packaging-heavy categories, changed once. A small number of purchases account for most household plastic: bottled water, single-portion snacks, produce in trays, liquid detergent, toiletries. Changing five recurring purchases beats a hundred careful decisions, because recurring means it compounds without further effort.
2. Buy fewer, larger units. Packaging scales with surface area, not volume. One large container is materially less plastic than six small ones. It is the same reason multipacks of individually wrapped items are the worst case in any category.
3. Refill where it exists, ignore it where it does not. Refill shops and concentrate refills for cleaning products genuinely reduce material. If the nearest one is a 20-minute drive, the arithmetic gets murky. That is a real trade-off, not a reason for guilt.
4. Durable replacements for genuinely repeated use. A reusable bottle or bag has a higher manufacturing footprint than the disposable it replaces and only pays that back over many uses. So the reusable item you actually carry is worth far more than the four you own and leave at home. Owning fewer, using them more.
5. Recycle 1 and 2 properly. Rinse, keep them loose rather than bagged, and leave films out of the bin. This still matters. It is simply the smallest of the three bars, not the largest.
What to be sceptical about
"Biodegradable" and "compostable" plastics. Most require industrial composting at temperatures a garden heap does not reach, and many are not accepted by municipal composting either. In a landfill they behave much like conventional plastic. In the ocean they mostly do not degrade as advertised.
Ocean cleanup as the solution. Jambeck and colleagues (2015) estimated millions of tonnes entering the ocean from land annually. Interception and cleanup are worth doing, but the inflow is the dominant term in that equation.
Recycled-content claims without a percentage. "Made with recycled materials" is not a quantity. A number, verified, is.
Your individual footprint as the whole story. Household consumption is a genuine but modest share of plastic production; packaging design, industrial use and waste infrastructure are larger levers, and those respond to regulation rather than to your shopping. Do the household part because it is available to you, not under the impression that it is the main mechanism.
Questions people ask
Is recycling plastic pointless? No, for PET and HDPE it works and is worth doing. For most other resins the honest answer is that collection does not lead to recycling.
What percentage of plastic is actually recycled? Around 9% of all plastic waste ever generated, per the 2017 Science Advances analysis. Current national rates vary; the EPA publishes US figures by material.
Are paper bags better than plastic? Not straightforwardly. Paper has a higher manufacturing and transport footprint and a lower reuse count. Reusing whatever you already own beats replacing it.
Does rinsing containers matter? Yes. Contamination is a common reason otherwise recyclable material is rejected.
